Affiliate Programs
We touched on Affiliate Programs a little bit earlier in this tutorial. When using these programs you act, in essence, as a free-lance salesperson for a company, and make a commission on any sales you make for them. You act to bring visitors to your website, make them aware of the product or other company, and then send them on their way to the other company. You will probably lose your visitor. This is the way it goes. You may however make a commission which is where it's at in Affiliate Programs.
Associate Program is another term meaning the same thing. Either way you see it termed it is the same thing. Both act and work identically to each other.
Generally, these programs work best when the subject matter compliments, or is the same as, the content of your site. Consequently, BettysGardeningAdvice.com, which is obviously about gardening, is going to do better promoting gardening related Affiliate Programs that they will selling Online Marketing Courses. On the other hand, the web site about online marketing probably won't make very many sales to a gardening Affiliate Program. I'm sure you get the idea.
That is not to say you cannot build a brand new web site around an Affiliate Program. It will take longer to create an income from it, because you need to build up your traffic levels. But this can be done. You may even want to find several, or at least more than one, Affiliate Program to offer your visitors. Let them make a decision between them. Competition, comparison, all at one site. Your Affiliate Program manager(s) may or may not like this arrangement. That needs to be looked at before you do it.
There are a gazillion Affiliate Programs out there right now. You can find one for just about any subject matter going. It has grown into a major player in the Internet Marketing arena. Several companies have sprung up that work as middle men, offering many, many programs through one source. Commission Junction is one of these. You can join literally hundreds of programs through the links on their site. You get your check through them also, for all income combined. Combined meaning if you make $10.00 from program A and $15 from program B and $30 from program C you'll get a check for $55.00 from Commission Junction for that month. Nice, becuase programs usually have a minimum check amount of between $25 - $100 before they send you a check. Using one of these programs eliminates that problem.
Here is a list of programs, and middle men sites, that offer multiple Affiliate Programs to join. These multiple program sites offer many, many programs, not just one of their own. The act as the bank and merchant account for hundreds of advertisers. When you make a sale it goes through these companies and these companies issue checks to you. It is a good system, and I highly recommend it. Below are more recommended Affiliate Programs.
